What is Voicemail?
Voicemail is a form of service provision to replace a personal answering machine that runs on a platform in the phone network.
Voicemail was introduced by most operators in the nineties as an answering device for every fixed telephone connection. Calls to which there is no reply are forwarded to the voicemail platform. The caller can leave behind a message. The recipient of the voicemail will then receive a notification on his fixed telephone line that he/she has a voicemail message. The only difference between a voicemail system for a fixed connection and a voicemail system for a mobile is that the mobile user is notified of the voicemail by SMS.
Why Voicemail?
Voicemail offers users extra service by always allowing a message to be left behind. For the telecom operator, this also means extra income. The caller is routed to a voicemail box, the message is played back and in most cases, there is a call-back based on the message.
